Our District
The Waikanae Lions Club is part of District 202-M which is one of seven Lions Clubs International districts in New Zealand. It covers the Lower North Island’s East Coast, stretching from the East Cape down to Wellington, and then heading north along the Kapiti Coast as far as Levin.
Lions Clubs are volunteer organizations dedicated to serving their local communities and the world. Their motto is “We Serve.” Within District 202-M, Lions clubs undertake a wide range of service projects, which can include:
- Community Support: This often involves energetic tasks like providing firewood for welfare cases, selling raffle tickets for fundraising, and assisting with various local needs. They aim to review and ensure their services remain relevant to community needs.
- Youth Programs: District 202-M is actively involved in promoting youth projects such as Speechmakers, Peace Posters, Youth of the Year Awards, Children of Courage, Leos Clubs, and Cub Clubs.
- Health Initiatives: Lions Clubs worldwide have a long history of supporting vision-related causes (inspired by Helen Keller) and are also involved in diabetes awareness and control. Some districts also support mobile skin cancer screening services.
- Environmental Projects: This can include community clean-ups, tree planting, recycling efforts, and environmental education.
- Disaster Relief: Lions are often among the first to offer aid during disasters, with support from the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
District 202-M clubs aim to be cosmopolitan mixes of ages, genders, and interests, adapting to modern lifestyles with increased use of technology and social media. They also hold annual conventions to discuss financial results, focus areas, and new proposals, as well as to foster fellowship among members.
In essence, District 202-M Lions are a group of dedicated volunteers making a positive impact on their communities across a significant portion of New Zealand’s North Island.
